A Special Message From DJ BERN…

Today is September 7th, 2012. Five years ago today, I got my first real paid gig as a DJ. As I sit here in the aftermath of a mild earthquake, I can’t help but reflect on what I’ve seen and experienced over the past five years. From all of the college ice breakers, house parties, industry concerts, weddings, NYE parties, and the club events, whether they were packed wall-to-wall or empty as an abandoned house, I’ve learned a lot about the business and myself on this journey. I am happy to say that the best is yet to come.

For those of you that haven’t even bothered to check the ABOUT page on this site, let me give you a brief history on my career. It actually started before 2007, two years earlier on the campus of The University of Cincinnati. While we should have been going to class and doing homework, me and two of my roommates were busy kicking it. We listened to a lot of music, but our inspiration came from Atlanta’s DJ Jelly and his ‘blend’ tapes; acapellas of popular songs mixed with instrumentals from other hit songs. We decided to do our own version of this kind of music. That’s how The Wrecking Crew started. It had mild success but it felt good creating something different people could enjoy.

After leaving UC and attending Bowling Green State University the next year, I continued to work on other blend tapes without the other two people. School wasn’t working out for me, and eventually I needed a way to pay for school since my student loans were all used up. I thought to myself I could DJ part time and use that money to pay for school. At that time, I didn’t have any DJ equipment. The summer of 2007 I went back to Columbus and worked two full-time jobs with plans on buying turntables and a mixer at the end of the summer to take back with me to Bowling Green. The time I spent working to buy the equipment had a major effect on my personal life, but I was determined to follow through.

After the summer I moved back to Bowling Green and my roommates plugged me into a few people that were opening up an after hours spot off campus that might need a DJ. I agreed to be the exclusive DJ of Plan B, and that launched my DJ career officially. DJing Thursday-Saturday, 11pm-4am by myself made me learn the do’s and dont’s very quickly. I also DJed a few on-campus events, and eventually DJing grew from being an interest of mine to something I wanted to pursue full time. I decided it would benefit me more to move back to Columbus and expand my career.

I moved back to Columbus the summer of 2008 and immediately linked up with local artist Trek Manifest. We did a few shows around Columbus, and our fanbase grew quickly. Through a few people that knew my work from BGSU, word got around of my talents and more and more gigs came through. I had also been contributing to The Flypaper Magazine while in Bowling Green, and being in Columbus gave me more exposure and opportunity to grow. I was featured in monthly and weekly events through the help of other Columbus DJs, event planners, and socialites.

Other artists and promoters gave me opportunity one after another, and eventually the DJ BERN brand grew beyond my expectations. It was my personal goal to continue to evolve and develop into a major DJ in the city of Columbus. However, limited venues and events combined with a number of other talented DJs in the city meant that there was just not enough opportunity to go around. Even after having the opportunity to be one of few DJs to be featured on the city’s only Hip Hop radio station, I felt I had reached the ceiling of opportunity in the capital city. I wasn’t satisfied with my share of success; I wanted more.

In the fall of 2010 I decided to pack my bags and move to the City of Angels. Los Angeles is the second biggest media market in the world, and I felt that my talents could grow way beyond what was available in Columbus. I moved to Los Angeles in October of 2011. The transition was hard because not only was I rebuilding my career almost from scratch; I was also rebuilding my personal life in a new city. I immediately booked a few gigs in the city, but those quickly ran its course and the reality of being broke and sleeping on a relatives floor night in and night out made DJing less of a priority.

It has been almost a year since I’ve been in Los Angeles, and after second-guessing my decision to move and start over, I am happy to say that the momentum is picking up. I have had the opportunity to work with LA artists and promoters, and just like I did when I first started in Bowling Green and then after I moved to Columbus, I am quickly turning more and more people on to DJ BERN. As I sit in officies with some of the biggest names in the music industry, I can only imagine what’s next.

I want to take this time to thank every one that has contributed to my career directly and indirectly. I have to give it up to my family first, because they supported me even when they didn’t know if I was sure about this DJ career. I also have to give props to every one that took a chance on me and gave me a gig when they didn’t even know who I was. A lot of people get put on by friends or others that have personal connections with each other. A lot of the promoters and planners that gave me a shot did it purely on a hunch, and I was prepared and wise enough to make the most out of those opportunities. Throughout my career I have asked only for the opportunity to show people my talent, and by doing that I have build great relationships with people. I sacrificed a lot of time, money, and personal relationships to live the life of DJ BERN, but it makes all of the success I’ve experienced thus far that much more enjoyable.

Remember; the best is yet to come. I don’t believe in failure. I am all in on the DJ BERN brand and I won’t stop until I make my fans, friends, and family proud.
